The Story behind the scent
The curious creature that adorns this candle is none other than a bake-danuki. Appearing in a number of Japanese classics and folklore, this supernatural animal is commonly associated with the real-life tanuki, a cuddly-looking raccoon dog native to Japan. Despite the bake-danuki's shapeshifting powers, this jovial beast is not usually portrayed as fearsome or menacing. In fact, this trickster can be quite humorous. In this image, he is transforming himself into Fūjin, the Japanese god of wind. However, one might venture to suggest that this rather languorous bake-danuki would have done better to transform himself into Fūjin's lazy brother Raijin, the god of thunder. No matter his disguise, this jolly totem of mischief is regarded as a symbol of good luck and fortune. May he bring you much of both.
